A 6th anniversary celebration should be a time of joy — but for Food Fantasy veterans, it turned into a horror show where their beloved mascot character got done dirty just to shill new gacha banners.
Rice (米饭), the game's undisputed poster girl, has always been established in the main storyline as the incarnation of the 'Primordial God' — a being who reversed time and created countless cycles of reincarnation to save the protagonist. This was the emotional backbone that long-time players built their attachment on. But the anniversary writing team threw all that out the window: to prop up two new limited-time banner characters, they retconned Rice by dumping two random 'brothers' and a 'creator' figure onto her lore — completely contradicting the established canon that gacha characters are created by the god in the first place. The writers didn't even bother keeping their own lore consistent.

The original poster also included a screenshot from the dev studio's official classification page, showing Food Fantasy tagged under the 'female-oriented' category. However, veteran players were quick to clarify in the comments: Food Fantasy is more accurately classified as ML (Master Love — where characters one-sidedly adore the player), not a traditional otome game like the mainstream Chinese titles.

The post immediately split the comment section into factions. One player asked 'how many deranged writers is that this year already?' — pointing to a systemic problem in how Chinese gacha games hire and promote narrative staff. A top-voted comment nailed the root cause: after years of writer turnover, new hires only understand the world through onboarding PowerPoints and handover docs. They have zero emotional investment in the characters. 'Not only do they not care — they deliberately destroy popular characters' established personalities to feed their own ego, push their headcanons, and assert dominance in the team.'
Others compared this to the classic gacha disasters where Blue Archive or Azur Lane writers shoved yuri subtext in players' faces and butchered the face-of-the-game characters. One commenter sighed: 'Is getting your mascot character assassinated some kind of universal gacha law?' — as if every gacha game's poster girl is doomed to become a stepping stone for future writers.
However, some commenters pointed out that the original drama post itself wasn't framed well. Veterans stressed that Food Fantasy has always had a BL ship tradition, so blaming 'fujoshis' misses the point entirely — the real issue is writers eating their own canon (吃书, 'consuming the book' = retconning established lore) and destroying characters to push new banners. One player explained: the ML label casts a wider net than pure otome; Rice's relationship with the player character was always intentionally ambiguous so the company could milk multiple demographics. But this time, the retcon went way too far.
In the end, veterans could only cope with gallows humor: 'Your daughter is not my daughter.' The original launch writers are long gone, and the new ones clearly don't give a damn about legacy characters. What was supposed to be a 6th anniversary celebration turned into a public execution of the game's most iconic mascot.
