Recently, the NetEase MOBA title 'Onmyoji Arena' (slang: 'Ba Ji' or 'Plucked Chicken') has triggered a firestorm on gaming forums due to its latest marketing stunt. The official account posted a long-winded, overly dramatic manifesto announcing that previously paid-for, limited-edition skins would be given away for free. This move has predictably infuriated the player base, especially the 'whales' who had previously spent money to acquire them.

The comment section under the original post turned into a roast session. Many users pointed out that the copywriting feels like a cringey, outdated TV infomercial from the early 2000s, with some joking that this 'lunatic' marketing style must be part of NetEase's standard employee onboarding. Players noted that this isn't the first time the game has tried to 'troll' its competitor, Honor of Kings, only to abandon the narrative or go silent when the backlash becomes too intense.
As for the attempt to attack the pricing of 'epic skins' in competing games, users remained skeptical. While acknowledging that Honor of Kings' gacha mechanics can be pricey, they pointed out the irony: Onmyoji Arena pioneered these skin-gacha systems years ago. Attempting to moralize while failing to fix their own pricing issues just makes the developer look desperate and cheap.
