The Chinese server hasn't even officially returned yet, but Blizzard's censorship machine is already running at full speed. In the freshly released Hearthstone patch 29.4, eagle-eyed players spotted sweeping changes to Simplified Chinese card art — "Blood" effects turned purple, swords literally evaporated from characters' hands, and even a female orc's cleavage got ironed flat.

Comparing the censored versions against the original English card art makes the differences painfully obvious.

Here's the kicker: Blizzard's censorship system is tied to your language setting, not your server region. On the CN server, switching to English gives you the uncensored art; on overseas servers, switching to Simplified Chinese automatically triggers the sanitized versions. These specific cards were all released after the CN server shut down in early 2023, and at launch, the Simplified Chinese versions had zero censorship. The fact that they're now being retroactively scrubbed is basically a smoking gun that this is preparation for the China server's imminent return under a new partnership with NetEase.
As more players dug through their collections, the before-and-after comparisons kept getting more absurd. The comparison images spread like wildfire across forums.

The comments section instantly turned into a roast session. User "路过死骑" (Passing Death Knight) cut straight to the point: "Why is even a sword stabbing yourself getting censored? There's not a single drop of blood visible." The irony becomes even more delicious when you look at the card's Flavor Text — one user posted a screenshot of it alongside the censored art, cranking the satire up to eleven.

The vanishing sword sent imaginations running wild. One commenter noted it now looks like the character is just flexing: "Hey, wanna go?" Others piled on: "The sword is completely gone — a medical miracle! No more self-stabbing needed." Someone even sarcastically theorized the removal was because the card "promotes self-harm, with immeasurable negative influence on everyone."
But the most jaw-dropping discovery was arguably the cleavage censorship. User "d_ebers" pointed out that a female orc character's cleavage had been smoothed into what they described as "lunch meat" — basically turning her chest into a flat slab. The community collectively raised an eyebrow: "Don't tell me someone actually got flustered looking at a female orc's cleavage? How much of a problem do they have with cleavage exactly?" Players even joked that "Blizzard's influence on player aesthetics is truly immeasurable."

The skull-related changes also sparked debate. Some players initially thought the tusks (獠牙) had been removed, only to realize they'd read it backwards — the change actually swapped a human skull for a beast skull with added tusks. Either way, the criticism still landed: "A green-eyed skull seems scarier for kids, honestly." One player who claimed familiarity with China's content review standards offered perspective: "This skull censorship is actually quite restrained — by official submission standards, you can't have ANY skull imagery at all."
As for why Kel'Thuzad ("Kel" as fans call him) was never censored, one player speculated it was because "his card art looked more like animal bones than human bones." Another user dropped a loaded one-liner: "So Shanghai's long arm of censorship has finally reached Blizzard's doorstep" — a pointed reference to the regulatory pressure that NetEase, as the returning CN distributor, would need to navigate.
Overall, the community's reaction is dominated by roasting and meme-ing. While a few voices genuinely praised Blizzard for being "sincere" about the CN return, the overwhelming consensus is that the censorship is absurdly over the top — swords vanish, cleavage disappears, blood turns purple, and even veteran content reviewers are left scratching their heads wondering what exactly Blizzard is afraid of. The Chinese server's comeback is drawing closer, but players' gaming experience has already been "optimized" before the servers even open.
