Fox News Slams School Mural With 'Genshin Impact Demon Face' for Promoting LGBTQ — NGA Users Discover It's Actually Overwatch's Genji

You can't make this stuff up: Fox News mistook Overwatch's Genji for a Genshin Impact "demon mask" in a serious news report about an LGBTQ school mural — and NGA users cracked the case with a single Japanese pun chain.

In September 2023, a middle school in western Michigan was ordered by its school board to remove a mural from its health clinic. The mural was painted by a Grant High School student who won an art contest the previous October.

According to the report, several parents quickly filed complaints after seeing the mural's content. It featured a student wearing a T-shirt in transgender pride flag colors, along with a Hamsa hand symbol. Parents claimed the mural promoted witchcraft — because they believed the "demon face" depicted was inspired by the popular video game Genshin Impact.

Grant Public Schools later issued a statement saying certain features of the mural "were not part of the original submission" and that the matter "was not on the board agenda." But Fox News clearly didn't do their homework — the article's own photos prominently featured the Overwatch logo in the upper left corner.

An NGA user on the 8th floor (楼) was the first to call it out: 'Isn't that demon face on the green background actually Genji's skin from Overwatch? There's literally an OW logo in the upper left.' Then came the galaxy-brain deduction: 'Genji = genji = げんじ = げんし = げんしん = genshin. Case closed.' A phonetic chain from Japanese romaji to Mandarin pinyin, welding Overwatch and Genshin Impact together for all eternity.

User on the 15th floor brought receipts — posting side-by-side comparisons of Genji's skin while noting that 'the original Fox News article literally says Genshin Impact, so technically the translation wasn't wrong.' They also dropped a spicy take: 'Even without this news, Mihoyo stuffing their games full of LGBTQ undertones is hardly a secret, right?' This comment quickly ignited debate.

The 16th floor user redirected blame squarely at American society: 'Do you really think America's LGBTQ culture war is Mihoyo's fault? This is clearly a societal problem within the US itself.' Meanwhile, the 7th floor posted more comparison screenshots trying to set the record straight.

The best analysis came from the 19th floor. This user pointed out that the so-called 'demon mask' is actually a Nuo mask (傩面) — a traditional Chinese exorcism mask — placed on a health-themed mural that literally says 'stay healthy.' Their conclusion was devastating: 'A mural that added an exorcism mask as a blessing for good health somehow got twisted into an LGBTQ propaganda tool with a demon face. The quadruple win here is genuinely surreal.'

The 18th floor couldn't help but laugh: 'Sure, both sides hate LGBTQ stuff and Mihoyo, but MAGA media and NGA degenerates (糖人) reaching the same conclusion from completely different angles is actually hilarious.' And that 4th floor comment — 'Mihoyo should do more of this kind of cultural output (文化输出)' — carried a bizarre note of pride amid the absurdity. As of now, the mural's fate remains unclear, but it has already achieved something remarkable: bringing Fox News, Overwatch, Genshin Impact, and the NGA community together in a cross-dimensional collab nobody asked for.
