Genshin Impact's signature weapon system just took its first big step into "visual flair" territory — and in doing so, it absolutely demolished years of community copium that players had been clinging to. The upcoming character Arlecchino (known as "The Knave") features a signature weapon that physically transforms into a scythe when she equips it, complete with unique visual effects. This marks the first time in Genshin's history that a limited signature weapon has received character-exclusive cosmetic changes.

From the leaked screenshots and animated previews, the weapon model visibly morphs from a standard polearm into a scythe, perfectly complementing Arlecchino's attack animations. The visual impact is undeniably impressive.
However, what should have been a cool reveal quickly turned into a philosophical reckoning on NGA. The top-voted comment cut straight to the bone: "In other games this wouldn't be a big deal, but in Genshin it is. Back when people complained about Nilou holding a brick that didn't match her at all, the fanboy defense was always 'Genshin doesn't have signature weapons.'" This hits hard because for years, whenever players criticized terrible weapon-character mismatches (like Nilou literally swinging a weapon that looked nothing like her aesthetic), hardcore defenders would wave the "signature weapons don't exist in Genshin" flag. Now the devs themselves have added character-exclusive weapon skins, essentially dismantling their own shield.
One commenter drew a direct parallel to a recent controversy in Wuthering Waves (鸣潮): "I looked it up — putting character animations behind constellation upgrades in Wuthering Waves was considered drama, so I think this counts too." The implication is clear: if locking animations behind paid systems is predatory in one game, then tying cosmetic weapon transformations to the gacha weapon banner is fundamentally the same playbook.
On the technical side, players explained why the scythe effect only works for Arlecchino: "Because of Genshin's shared weapon model system and similar attack animations across the same weapon type, even Arlecchino's scythe animations aren't great. If you gave this weapon to other polearm users it would look absolutely terrible." In other words, the scythe transformation would be jarring and ugly on characters whose movesets weren't designed for it.
There were some moderate takes too — one user said "as long as it doesn't affect stats, having special visual effects for signature weapons is actually pretty fun" — but that was quickly met with sarcastic pushback: "Don't worry, we haven't reached the 'pull three limited characters to unlock combo attacks' stage yet." The sarcasm drips with concern about where this monetization road leads.
When it came to costs, players did the math: "Not only do you have to pull for the character herself, you also need to hit the weapon banner where going to pity can require up to three rounds of the worst-case scenario." For a single signature weapon, that's potentially three full pity cycles on the notoriously stingy weapon banner. One player summed up the sentiment bluntly: "Extraction on top of extraction, crystallization on top of crystallization! There will always be whales willing to keep spending."
There was also an adorable side story — veteran Honkai Impact 3rd players immediately got flashbacks at the sight of the scythe. "There was a scythe character in Honkai 3rd, what was her name again? This feels so familiar." Other veterans quickly confirmed it was Rita, with one digging through old screenshots and sighing: "It's been five years and she still looks even better now, damn." Another player ran with the bit: "Rita's ship partner was C-Ron, right? When are they releasing Genshin's version?" — proving that Honkai 3rd memes transcend game boundaries within the miHoYo/HoYoverse ecosystem.
All in all, the addition of character-specific weapon skins may seem like a minor visual upgrade on the surface, but it represents a significant philosophical shift — Genshin moving from "universal weapons" toward increasingly exclusive weapon-character pairings. For anyone still defending the old "no signature weapons" narrative, this update is nothing short of an official betrayal. Whether this becomes a standard feature going forward, and how much further it pushes the monetization envelope, remains to be seen.
