DNF mobile finally held its preview livestream, but the first wave of hype wasn't about new gameplay — it was about an absolutely legendary censorship spectacle. The Berserker class, iconic for its blood-red skill effects, got a brand-new nickname from the community: "Black Eye" (黑眼).
Here's what happened: while watching the Berserker skill showcase in the livestream, players noticed that the signature "Great Suction" vortex changed from its iconic crimson red to white, and the fire-breathing skills all turned pitch black. The entire skill color palette — gone, replaced with shades of black and grey.

A commenter in the thread immediately dropped a side-by-side comparison — censored version on the left, original on the right — and the visual impact was devastating. They added: "Don't even bother hoping, the PC version is already all black now." So this isn't a mobile-only problem; the original game has already fallen.

The same poster also threw in a "no-prize quiz" — in the comparison below, the left is uncensored and the right is censored. Can you spot the change? The answer: the "zettai ryouiki" (that tiny sliver of exposed thigh between stockings and skirt, a classic anime aesthetic detail) was whited out. But the devs forgot to adjust the stocking edges, so it now looks like the character is wearing an extra layer of white tights underneath their stockings. The sheer absurdity of this pixel-level editing is peak comedy.

The comment section erupted. Old-school players lamented: "We're going backwards — might as well revert to the literal shit-brown color palette from the 2008 beta." Others roasted: "You clearly haven't been a DNF player (创批) for a while — the PC version has already gone through multiple rounds of censorship." One Elementalist main shared their own horror story: "The garter straps on my class's 3rd Awakening art were censored, but the 1st Awakening garter straps are completely untouched" — zero consistency in the censorship logic.
One player delivered a killer metaphor that went viral: "They turned a flamethrower into a dry powder fire extinguisher" — complete with a devastating comparison image.

But here's the real debate that emerged: is this regulatory censorship, or Tencent's own excessive self-censorship (过度和谐)? One veteran player put it bluntly: "A few years ago I'd blame the censors (河蟹, slang for government content moderation), but at this point with DNF, I strongly suspect it's just Tencent castrating their own game." Another agreed: "This level and volume of censorship — only DNF has gone this far. The theory that they did extreme censorship to pass mobile game approval (过审) is probably not just speculation."
A longtime player also added important context: "This ink-wash art style censorship is from several patches ago on PC. The latest round censors the Priest's cross-shaped weapon and the husky pet" — meaning DNF's censorship journey is far from over, and in fact keeps escalating.
Whether DNF mobile will retain any of the original art style at launch remains a big question mark. But one thing is certain: players have evolved beyond anger into darkly comedic resignation. As one commenter perfectly encapsulated the absurd double standard: "Otome games get uncensored car sex scenes and 'liberating' romance content, but pixel art characters get flagged for 'pornographic violence'" — a razor-sharp summary of the nonsensical state of content moderation.
