Genshin Impact's New 5-Star Cloud Retainer Signature Weapon Caught Shipping Xiao x Cloud Retainer Via Bird Motifs? Community: 'Bro This Is the Biggest Stretch Ever'

How much hidden meaning can players squeeze out of a signature weapon's artwork? The two birds on Genshin Impact's new 5-star character Cloud Retainer's (留云借风真君) signature weapon catalyst have sparked a heated debate about whether miHoYo secretly embedded CP (couple) content into the weapon design.

It all started when a Tieba user (from the "Leaker" subforum) posted a theory claiming the two birds on Cloud Retainer's weapon aren't random decorations — they supposedly correspond to the bird motifs in Xiao's and Cloud Retainer's respective constellation (命座) artwork. In this player's eyes, it was no coincidence. It was the devs shipping the two characters through weapon art.

To back up the theory, the original poster laid out three "smoking guns": first, the weapon's two birds match the constellation art of both Xiao and Cloud Retainer; second, Cloud Retainer is designed as Xiao's exclusive support (专拐, literally "dedicated buffer"), mechanically binding the two characters together; and third, a former IP director nicknamed 小螺号 (Xiao Luo Hao) allegedly has a track record of sneaking CP content into the game — previously shipping Scaramouche × Nahida (散草CP) and Xiao × Lumine (魈萤CP), and now apparently doing it again with Xiao × Cloud Retainer. The poster even warned readers not to dismiss the similarities just because the birds look slightly different.

When the post got ported to NGA though, the reception was overwhelmingly skeptical. First came the wave of confusion. "I don't get it — is it just because they're both birds?" asked one user. Another admitted, "Am I too dumb to see the connection, or is this just a massive stretch?" Several people literally asked for better annotated screenshots because they couldn't see what the poster was seeing.

Then came the direct rebuttals. One user pointed out that "besides both being birds, there's literally nothing else connecting Xiao's and Cloud Retainer's constellation art. And the weapon art pattern is just Cloud Retainer's own constellation motif — this proves nothing." Another quipped, "Is this bird the same as that bird? Look at the whiskers on Xiao's constellation bird — you can tell they're completely different designs." Someone else predicted this theory was about to become "the next meme on the gacha community's encyclopedia of copium."

The community also pushed back on the CP angle itself. One commenter noted that even Tieba users thought the original poster was overthinking it, pointing out that the dev team has been clearly shipping Xiao × Lumine for years. The claim that a former IP director was inserting personal shipping preferences — something Chinese gaming communities call "stuffing private goods" (塞私货) — was treated as circumstantial at best.

Perhaps the most representative comment captured the mainstream player sentiment: "These days, haters need a pair of golden eyes and way too much free time to fish for drama out of thin air. Must be exhausting." Another user's blunt take — "Only you shippers think this matters" — cuts to the core of the issue: are these weapon design details intentional shipping signals, or just fans projecting their own desires onto pixels?

As of now, this debate remains firmly in "believe it or don't" territory. Whether Cloud Retainer's weapon birds are a deliberate CP easter egg or simply normal constellation-themed artwork, miHoYo is never going to clarify. But one thing's for sure — when players start analyzing bird whisker counts on a weapon catalyst, you know this game has been theorycrafted to absolute death. And honestly? That's kind of beautiful.
