NetEase's 'World Beyond' Trolls Rival Otome Games on Weibo, Gets Blocked — Instantly Becomes 2024's Biggest Meme in the Otome Community

In January 2024, the Chinese otome game market was already a bloodbath — 'Love and Deepspace' was about to open pre-downloads, and every studio was fighting tooth and nail for players' attention. Right on cue, NetEase's new game 'World Beyond' pulled off a stunt so wild it left the entire community speechless.

'World Beyond' is a traditional visual novel marketed as an "infinite flow" otome game. Word on the street was that the project had been scrapped once, then revived just to fill a slot — set for a late January launch. In the fiercely competitive otome market, most insiders wrote it off as dead on arrival. But NetEase — nicknamed "Pig Farm" by Chinese gamers — had other plans.

Eight days before its official launch, 'World Beyond' launched an "open beta with no data wipe and no player cap" — essentially sneaking out an early release to avoid missing the hype window around 'Love and Deepspace.' But that was just the appetizer.

The main course came that afternoon: the official 'World Beyond' Weibo account literally showed up in the comment sections of 'Light and Night' and 'Love and Deepspace's official Weibo posts, leaving friendly comments and trying to mingle like a clueless party crasher.

Surprisingly, the stunt worked — at least in terms of visibility. A previously unknown game instantly shot to top-tier brand awareness. 'Light and Night's' comment section turned into a circus: otome fans were spamming the official account with things like "Hubby, someone's talking to you~ Say something!" After enduring the chaos all afternoon, the 'Light and Night' team finally cracked and deleted 'World Beyond's' comments.

And just like that, the biggest viral meme of 2024 in the Chinese otome community was born.

The NGA forum comment section exploded with reactions. One user quipped: "Is being unhinged a basic hiring requirement for NetEase's community managers?" A veteran player added the brutal truth: "If this actually worked, their other otome game 'Tears of Themis' wouldn't be dead last among the Big Four. NetEase has no distribution channels, so all they can do is leech off others." Others sighed: "So this is what you do when you can't afford proper marketing, huh" — and the classic: "NetEase community ops still giving off that unhinged stan energy."

Not everyone was hostile, though. Some entertainment-seekers admitted: "I genuinely love watching NetEase go feral like this, it cracks me up every time." And at least one non-otome gamer was successfully converted: "I'm a dude who never touches otome games, and even I know this game exists now. This is objectively a huge success."

Latest update from the morning of January 18: 'Light and Night' has started calling in reinforcements. What kind of counterattack is brewing? The NGA spectators have already pulled up their chairs and are waiting for the next episode.
