Reverse: 1999 New Year Limited Character 'Qu Niang' Writing Controversy: Internal Sabotage or Just Bad Writing?

0 热度

A limited New Year 6-star character who can't dress herself, can't count — was this seriously written by a professional? Recently, a post on the NGA forum has ignited a firestorm of controversy over the story writing for Qu Niang in Reverse: 1999's New Year update, sparking heated debate over whether this was deliberate character sabotage or simply abysmal writing.

It all started when a player stumbled upon a Bilibili video titled "How Deep Blue Destroyed Qu Niang" and posted to verify its claims. According to the video's summary, the New Year patch introduced two new 6-star characters — Qu Niang and Ge Tian (nicknamed "Bird Man"). However, their portrayals in the story were polar opposites: Qu Niang was written as reckless and unaccountable, while Ge Tian came across as noble, taking blame and saving the day. Qu Niang essentially became a stepping stone for Ge Tian's character arc. The original poster couldn't help but ask: So she's basically a female version of the infamous "Water Dragon" trope? People always praise this game's writing — is that just fan bias, or did they only mess up with Qu Niang and one other character?

The comment section erupted immediately. Some players were blunt: "Qu Niang's story is absolute garbage, I can't even." But others pushed back against the "internal hatred" narrative: "Just admit the writing sucked — why do you have to invent some conspiracy about the devs hating her? Isn't it enough that gacha game writers just aren't that good?" Another added more concisely: "Bad writing ≠ internal hatred. It could just be that the writing team took a massive L."

However, the top-voted comment delivered a razor-sharp rebuttal: "If they truly hated her internally, they wouldn't have given her the coveted 'limited' banner title AND damage output that powercreeps every DPS that came before. Ge Tian's writing isn't even that great either — he only looks normal because everyone else's logic is so absurd. Bottom line: the writing team was simply too incompetent to salvage the story. The limited character they were trying to hype flopped, while the 5-star filler and pseudo-limited characters somehow came out looking fine by comparison."

The 8th-floor commenter offered an even deeper analysis from a narrative craft perspective: "One character is written as a bratty troublemaker yet beloved by the townspeople, while the other is portrayed as a moral paragon yet constantly misunderstood by residents — the author's bias is obvious. The higher they built up Qu Niang through the townspeople's praise, the bigger the crash when reality hit — that's called 'building up to tear down.' Meanwhile, the townspeople kept misunderstanding and guilt-tripping Ge Tian, positioning him as the perfect victim who's morally untouchable — that's called 'trauma bonding with fans.'" They concluded: "I have nothing against the character herself, but the writer's little tricks just feel gross. Did you really have to resort to these manipulative techniques to sell a character?"

The most intense debate came from the 9th-floor commenter, a self-proclaimed whale who had fully invested in the character. This player argued: "It might not be internal hatred — it could be that they loved her too much, and all the major story red flags were glossed over with rose-tinted filters." Regardless, they declared: "Reverse: 1999's first limited character's image has already been destroyed."

To prove they weren't just some armchair critic, the player showed screenshots of their investment in the character, then shared Qu Niang's second-tier ascension artwork.

Then came the devastating question: "Know why Qu Niang isn't wearing her outfit properly in the art? Because she literally CAN'T PUT IT ON HERSELF." The player attached in-game story screenshots as evidence.

"This is genuinely the first time I've seen a reason like this. The writers could have just... not added this detail, but they deliberately chose to include it in the story. And she can't count either — every time you open her character page, you have to listen to her count from one to ten, I just can't..."

The 10th-floor commenter offered yet another angle: "You've got it backwards — the devs loved her too much. They gave her a villain's script then tried to whitewash her, but since she ends up knowing nothing about anything, she just comes across as mentally deficient."

Taking everything together, the core of this controversy boils down to one thing: Qu Niang, as a New Year limited, damage-powercreeping 6-star character, was supposed to be the absolute star of the patch. Instead, her story writing fell apart in every conceivable way. Whether it was "internal hatred," "excessive internal bias," or just "incompetent writers," the end result is the same — the first limited character's image has shattered into a million pieces in players' hearts.
