Recently, NetEase announced that it would officially terminate operations for the acclaimed puzzle-escape series 'The Room 3' and 'The Room: Old Sins' on April 17, 2023. This news caused quite a stir among players, primarily because these are single-player, one-time-purchase titles, yet they face the same fate as online service games.

According to the official announcement, once the servers shut down, players will be unable to log in due to the Chinese version's mandatory online authentication requirements. This effectively renders the games unplayable. Many players expressed their disbelief that a single-player game could simply be 'switched off' like an online multiplayer title.
The comment section was filled with heated debate. A veteran player pointed out the grim reality of the domestic market: 'There is no such thing as a true offline single-player game here because mandatory real-name verification requires a constant network connection.' As one user noted, a simple shutdown notice is all it takes to make these games vanish forever.

Regarding why NetEase wouldn't maintain the minimal server costs to keep them playable, some speculated that the games were no longer generating revenue from new users, leading the company to classify them as 'legacy' assets to be purged. Regardless of the business logic, this move has significantly eroded player trust, with many stating they are done with the publisher's products entirely.
