Since partnering with miHoYo in 2019, Genshin Impact has achieved massive global success, boasting over 60 million monthly active users and generating significant revenue for Sony. According to Reuters, this success has motivated Sony to expand its incubation program in China, aiming to gain an edge over its main rival, Microsoft. Bao Bo, Sony's China game production director, revealed plans to invest over 1 million RMB into new projects, supporting developers of various sizes.
Sony reportedly has a pipeline of over 10 upcoming games across different genres. Tatsuo Eguchi, President of Sony Interactive Entertainment Shanghai, noted that the success of Genshin Impact convinced Sony's top management that Chinese games are a vital part of the global industry. Meanwhile, Microsoft is also aggressively seeking Chinese partners to counter Sony. Reports suggest Microsoft had early talks with miHoYo, but failing to secure a deal has made them even more desperate to find the next big hit from China.
However, the gaming community is skeptical about Microsoft's actual progress. Many point out that top-tier Chinese titles like 'Wuthering Waves' (referred to as 'Baimian Qianxiang') and 'Infinity Nikki' have already signed with Sony, while Microsoft's footprint remains faint. Players also speculated about the console availability of 'Honkai: Star Rail' and joked about the Sony director's name, while others used the thread to vent frustrations toward certain international publishers who lost their standing in China due to their perceived arrogance.
