Nostalgia Monetized: The 'Obi Island' Cumulative Recharge Controversy under Leiting Games

Recently, the mobile adaptation of the classic childhood IP 'Obi Island' has become the center of a storm. The operator, Leiting Games, has managed to tank the game's reputation from mixed to widely criticized within just three months, thanks to their controversial management style.

The controversy centers on the 'Little Bear Piggy Bank' event, which is essentially a cumulative recharge milestone. In a game rooted in childhood nostalgia, the company set an 888 RMB threshold just to obtain a pair of wing accessories. Despite the immediate backlash, the developer didn't back down; instead, they launched another cumulative recharge event less than a month later. Even though the price dropped to 288 RMB, this repetitive exploitation feels like a direct insult to the players.

As players put it, 'The same people who were targeted for their pocket money as kids are being targeted again as adults.' Fans are calling this a cynical move to 'harvest leeks' (a Chinese slang for exploiting a group of users). Commentators noted that after being desensitized by other games' absurdly high recharge requirements, some players even started to view 888 RMB as 'cheap'—a clear sign of the psychological gaslighting happening within the community.
