The PJSK 2nd Anniversary 'Gift' Trap: A Masterclass in Monetization and Player Alienation

The 2nd anniversary of Project Sekai (PJSK), usually a time for celebration, has turned into a PR disaster thanks to SEGA’s (referred to by players as 'SBGA'—a derogatory slang term) suffocating 'anniversary mission board.' While the rewards look generous on paper, they are hidden behind nearly impossible skill requirements and predatory monetization, making them unattainable for the average player.

The event forced players to choose only three missions from a list of grueling tasks. For instance, the 'crafting' missions are virtually impossible to complete without buying specific limited-time outfits that cost 3,000 paid gems. The 'Gacha' missions are even more transparently greedy. Players jokingly remarked, 'The developers are basically holding the door open and demanding we pay our tribute.'

Furthermore, a system update to character rankings sparked huge controversy. The update rewarded players with varying amounts of crystals based on their past activity, leading to a massive disparity—some gained 50,000 crystals while others received almost nothing. Players with 'Big Monthly Passes' were the primary beneficiaries. Many felt the developers were simply recycling old assets to manipulate the player base, creating an 'us-versus-them' environment.

In the comments, players lamented the Japanese developer's mastery of 'leaking' their wallets. One veteran player stated, 'If you love Miku, buy a figure, don't give money to these greedy pigs.' Even high-skill rhythm gamers expressed disgust at being forced to pay for rewards, and many noted that this was the final straw that led them to uninstall the game.
