NetEase Games has officially announced the establishment of a new development studio, 'Jar of Sparks,' based in Seattle. Led by former Xbox industry veteran Jerry Hook, the studio aims to focus on creating 3A action-adventure titles, marking another strategic expansion by a Chinese gaming giant into the international market, following in the footsteps of Tencent and miHoYo.

This news sparked intense debate among NGA community members. Many players questioned the definition of 'Domestic 3A': if it's developed by an overseas team and funded by a Chinese company, can it really be considered 'made in China'? Furthermore, referring to NetEase’s notoriously controversial PR style—often described by Chinese players as 'green tea' operations (a slang term implying manipulative or hypocritical behavior)—users are worried that this reputation might translate poorly to the global stage, with some even joking about transforming 'NetEase' into a self-deprecating nickname for easy-to-mock blunders.
Experienced players also pointed out a recurring issue: Chinese tech giants often set up overseas studios that end up producing nothing. These studios are frequently led by industry veterans, only to disappear from public view after a few years. Players believe the root cause is a lack of clear goals and resource integration. By comparison, they highlighted miHoYo's North American team, which has a clearly defined role in global project collaboration rather than complete autonomy. The consensus is that if NetEase is merely building studios for the sake of appearances, they risk becoming nothing more than 'retirement homes' for overseas developers.
